Modern Day Mindfulness: A Tea Meditation

In this mindfulness exercise, take a moment to meditate with a cup of tea—warm or chilled—or any other drink of choice.

This practice invites you to draw parallels between the way we hold a warm cup of tea and the way the earth holds us. There is comfort in both.

In a fluid voice against the backdrop of tender piano notes, our guide Laura Araujo invites us to observe the “edges of our breath,” the “tops of our inhales,” and the “bottoms of our exhales.” In a similar fashion, she encourages us to notice the temperature, warmth, and fragrance of the tea we are sipping.

Sensations, responses, and emotions naturally emerge, but she reminds us there is no urgency to engage with them — we are creating the space to simply observe. In fact, doing so invites curiosity and wonder alongside a calming recess from thinking. When our mind wanders, as it so innocently does, this tea meditation gently reminds us to draw the mind back to the shape of our breath.
