We humans hate feeling bad and will do almost anything to avoid it. This is known as emotional avoidance, or “buffering,” as I call it.

Work-life balance is essential because you can’t have a life in balance if you exclude your work from the equation. But balancing work and the rest of your life can be tricky. Doing so means addressing a wide range of issues such as knowing your purpose, discovering your authentic self, improving focus, and putting yourself forward in a positive fashion by developing your emotional intelligence and improving your leadership skills.

For many of us, we’ve spent week after week wasting time – mostly unknowingly. We finish our day and don’t realize how much more we could have achieved. Not only could we have achieved more – if you’re about getting stuff done – but the quality of the experience could also’ve been far richer, engaging with tasks, and experiences so much more intentionally, taking care of our body and brain.

What do you do every single day? Are you fully aware of the things you do habitually – how much time you allocate to those things, and if they are serving your purpose? I know that’s a whole lot to contemplate and digest, but the new year is a great time to consider your morning routine.

When you give feedback, focus on positive comments about what’s working. What’s rewarded is repeated. Make a habit of asking for feedback from people you trust and respect. Make sure both giving and receiving feedback are always done in the service of a goal that the receiver cares about. And if you do find yourself the target of some clumsily delivered or hurtful feedback, remember that the interpretation of that feedback – and the decision about whether to act on it – is within your control. Over the years, I’ve kept this response handy for when people say, “Kimberly, you’re hyperactive!” I look them straight in the eyes, and with a big smile on my face, reply “Thank you for noticing! I do bring a great deal of energy and passion to my work. In fact, it was you who inspired this in me!” Stunned silence is the usual response. Sometimes what people think of us is none of our business.

We get it, we’re busy, and the list of to-do’s is endless. But a busy life doesn’t mean your brain needs to suffer. How? Sleeping more.

Many entrepreneurs have “I can sleep when I’m dead” on repeat in their heads – and the word forgiveness, is often not part of their vernacular. But it absolutely needs to be to level-up!
