Passionate about accessible education and evidence-based wellness, Laura founded The MAPS Institute, an educational wellness editorial and platform. Aside from her passion for research and educating, Laura is a classically trained vocalist, sound therapist, and a practitioner and teacher of Ashtanga and Restorative Yoga. She is the creator of the MAPS (Mindfulness, Activation, Purpose, and Surrender) philosophy and is in continual pursuit of helping her students and herself find balance amid the chaos around and within them. When not sifting through Nature Magazine, complaining about their paywalls, she enjoys trying new wine varietals, experimenting in the kitchen, riding her bicycle (sometimes cross-country), and spending time with her husband Charlie, cockapoo Miles, and expected baby girl, Ella. Have you tried sipping a warm, comforting cup of bone broth? If you’re at all plugged into the “wellness” scene, you are probably aware that bone broth is making quite the grand entrance into the health beverage world.
How do you usually spend your mornings? Do you wake up early to walk the dog or swing by a Starbucks before work? Do you sleep in until the last possible minute? Or do you hit the snooze button for the third time, dreading to get out of bed and start your day?
Our morning practices affect how we feel, react, and respond to situations throughout the day. If you drag yourself out of bed late and spend the next thirty minutes on your phone, chances are you’ll be exhausted by the end of the day. But if you put your mind and body first, such as through meditation and reflection, you’ll most likely see an increase in focus, energy, and awareness.
Practice this morning meditation to center both your mind and body, to ground yourself, and to set peaceful intentions for the rest of the day!
For many professionals, exhaustion is a regular state of being. And no amount of caffeine can correct its byproduct – impaired productivity.
Being compassionate is one of the most important skills to have – especially important when there are difficult things going on in the world. Tonglen Meditation, also known as compassion meditation, is an ancient form of meditation that allows you to focus on connecting with your inner and outward expression of compassion.
The practice transforms emotions that surface from suffering or misery into love and compassion. Inhale pain, exhale love. This natural compassion you tap into during this meditation feelings associated with suffering – reflect on what else you can apply this idea to in your daily life. How can you better respond to difficult situations or suffering people by connecting with and expressing your compassion?
While many experts advise that caffeine is not exactly nervous system friendly – this popular beverage may have a sustained epigenetic effect on our brain.
